QR

Is it art, is it a doodle, is it a bar code gone wrong ?

No it's a QR (short for Quick Response Code)

Invented in Japan by the Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave in 1994 to track vehicles during the manufacturing process.

It's taken a while, but now used for all sorts of diverse things :~)
