The common hogweed Heracleum sphondylium is extremely common in fertile meadows, hedges and neglected gardens. It occurs both in Eurasia and North America.
Hogweed seeds are very aromatic. They smell of anis - put them into a ˝ bottle of vodka and added 2 tablespoonfuls of honey. They produce a great liquor.
Hogweed is also a forgotten vegetable, once very important to Slavs. The word borsch (beetroot soup) derives from this word. Cooked hogweed leaves and stalks make wonderful soup - Recipe HERE
Scary video about attacking the plant
The weird thing is that it does not affect me at all and we have loads of it out in the woodland.... I pull it up with bare hands and have never been burnt !
