a flaky story.....................

I have very happy memories of the 99 ice cream. It was served by the gorgeous Tonibell ice cream van sales boy that I had a crush on !!

The are masses of theories on how the name came about....
The good old BEEB has a whole list of possible origins for the name.

My favorite is:
Could it be that possibly the flake, is stuck into the cone at a 99 degree angle? Leigh, Herts

Well using my trusty protractor on the one I have just bought, it's about 60 degrees, and we're not talking about the ambient temperature. Simon Lovatt, Birmingham

It seems that the original version was a square flake sandwiched in between ice cream and wafers.

Then we have the cone with one flake and also a 'rabbits ears' which is a double cone with two flakes, and a 99 with monkey blood (raspberry syrup!)

Today's version is pre-packaged and sold in supermarkets - there's no romance left in the world :~((

Listen to Tonibell (left) and for the total lowdown on the phenomena of 99's see Wikipedia

There is new ‘mash Cone’ consisting of sausage, mash potato, gravy and peas in an ice cream cone.
Food company Aunt Bessie’s claims it is breathing new life into the fortunes of the ice cream van by replacing the 99 Flake with an all-weather alternative.

There's even a K99 ice cream specially for dogs :~))
Since these are for dogs, the flavors aren't your regular chocolate and vanilla variants.
Two are currently available, namely :
the Dog Eat Hog World (gammon and chicken sorbet with a dog biscuit on top, served in a cone)
and the Canine Cookie Crunch (dog biscuits mixed in with vanilla ice cream).
