When you went to the toilet in a Dutch persons house, nine times out of ten there would be a Verjaardagskalender (Birthday Calender) hanging on the wall. This meant that birthdays were not forgotten (this is a crime punishable by banishment from that social circle in Holland!)
We too have one in our loo. However people die, move out of ones life etc and it was time to get a replacement.
To my surprise none of the big stores downtown sold them anymore. In a small card shop the assistant dais they'd not sold many the last few years, so don't stock them anymore....
What has happened to this very Dutch tradition ?
The only answer I can think of is modern technology.
There are so many ways now to keep track of birthdays:
Firefox users can get an add-on - A widget is available for Opera users
- Mac has a free download 'birthday book'
- Use the reminder service app via facebook
- You can use an online reminder service
- And I'm sure there's loads more options
And you can make one online with your own photo's
