parking spaces

Today I had to drive around the supermarket car park twice before finding a space to park my smallish car. This was not because there were no spaces empty, but because the gas guzzling SUV type cars are so big nowadays that when two of them park with a space in between, there is hardly enough room to get a normal car in, let alone opening the door to get in/out.

My Peugeot 206 is 4.02 metres long and 1.65 wide, so far less wide than the recommended size of parking spaces from the UK environment agency2.4 metres x 4.8 metres

But there is hope ...... a new elite seems to be emerging. Some supermarkets and shops are reserving spaces near the entrance for hybrid, eco friendy fueled cars and compacts.

For instance at Whole Foods (an American supermarket) , hybrid cars get to slip into one of the spots marked "Reserved for Alternative Fuel Vehicles" -- just steps from the front door -- while far more handsome cars circle the lot or slog up to the dark garage !
