waste not - want not

As a fervent customer of second hand shops, flea markets and eBay, I can only applaud loudly for the initiative of a new phenomena : The Repair Cafe

It was initiated by a Dutch woman by Martine Postma in Amsterdam in October of 2009. She wants to help society in two ways:
  • The 'thow away' consumer attitude could be reversed if we repair items that would otherwise probably end up in landfill sites
  • Social contact is established between the volunteers who help the owners repair an item.
She explains that it's NOT a repair shop where you just drop of an item to be fixed.

A volunteer will show you how to repair the item and you'll be expected to help or at least watch them do the job. You'll learn a new skill and have the opportunity to make contact with someone you'd probably never meet otherwise :~)

I heard yesterday on the radio that there are now 100 Repair Cafes in Holland and it's spreading out worldwide :~)) Watch this American video HERE

These two articles have loads for info on the fascinating subject ONE - TWO

footnote .... Although I find this a wonderful idea, it might just be that it's not good for the economy.
If you mend something you won't need to buy a new one..................
