In Holland they have a saying :
"Held op sokken"
= "Hero in socks"
It is derogatory and means someone who bluffs but is ready to run
I can't seem to find the origin of this saying....
However there are references to the Revolt of the va-nu-pieds (barefooted ones). This was a popular uprising in Normandy in 1639 following Louis XIII of France's decision to impose extremely burdensome salt tax (gabelle)
It could of course also mean that you can run away quietly on socks !
In Woerden they have a statue dedicated to these hero's :~)
