Yet another wonderful quote from Mark Twain :~))

"What ought to be done to the man who invented the celebrating of anniversaries? Mere killing would be too light"

He must have lived in Holland, where birthdays and ALL other anniversaries are religiously celebrated.
Not to turn up at someones birthday is regarded as VERY bad form indeed. Whole families can fall out over missed celebrations!

The living room will be set up with a circle of chairs > >

There are usually not enough, so garden furniture and folding chairs are brought in. I've even been to one party where you were asked to bring your own. Here's a picture of a 1950's party, but it's same today, except people wear jeans instead.

Of course in the summer the whole event can be moved outdoors, with party tents featuring highly on the list of attributes, and the rugulation cheese on a stick with a bit of pineapple can be replaced (if you dare) by a BbQ !

When I first came to Holland I worked with someone who had at least 8 brothers and sisters, as did her husband. All the couples had children and there was at least one birthday a week, if not two, the whole year round. They had purchased a special tea service to be used at each party. It would be washed up and packed into a box so that the next person could use it for their party - sometimes even the next day !!!!!!!!

If you ever happen to be in Holland and get invited to one of these events, here's a protocol of what to expect
