plonker....

A friend and I were discussing someone we think is a plonker.......................

To plonk originally meant to dump somethingg down.

Then the term plonker became a reference to someone who was forever drunk on cheap wine (cheap wine is nicknamed plonk) this person was usually a homeless person, or poor person.

Today the term plonker is a very light hearted insult. Its not even seen as an insult, its like calling someone a wally. Its in no way meant maliciously. you call someone a plonker when they say or do something stupid.

It's  synonymous with : dope, idiot, moron, wally, pillock, dunderhead, dimwit.
There is a very famous British TV series called "Fools and Horses".

The three main characters are ALL plonkers who drive about in a three wheeled Reliant, seen above.

One can buy t-shirts, mugs and all sorts relating to the series.

There is also an official appreciation society for the show.

My friend and I thought that a female plonker might be called a "plonkess" but it seems the correct term is plonkette. It's a very light-hearted way to call someone an idiot , often used to people with affection, and when you call a woman a "Plonkette" you do so with a great big smile on you're face, and it is completely non offencive.
