one of the causes of unemployment ?

Years ago most farm work was done by hand, millions of people were employed on the land and unemployment was not an item.

 Of course there was no Social Security in those days, so it was on the land or in the workhouse!!





Nowadays machines are taking over the harvesting of crops. Huge contractions enter the fields and orchards and make short work of getting the crop is.

Cherries, blueberries  tomatoes, oranges  are now being 'picked' by mechanical means.

Strawberries are picked 24/7 by this Japanese robot.



The monster on the right is a sugar cane harvester.........

It was hard work back in the manual days of farm work, and of course there was no Social Security..

But unemployment hardly existed. It was either work or go to the workhouse!

Just imagine how many jobs there would be if we chucked the machines out...
