poverty in old age in the UK

When I was about 19 I had a retired single lady with a very small pension living next door to me. She had to live very frugally and used to go to bed very early to save heating costs and her idea of a treat was a Rich Tea biscuit with her afternoon cup of tea.

I remember thinking at the time "this is NOT how I want to grow old"

The UK basic state pension is ludicrously low set currently at just £110.15 per week – one of the lowest in the developed world.  So people without any other form of pension or assistance really struggle.
This site has a video of the economies 4 pensioners are having to make to survive.

With the rise in retirement age I can see this becoming a reality............
