I used to like Valentines Day when I was a teenager, but only if I got several cards... Nowadays it's just one big spending spree, cards, flowers, expensive restaurants and hotels saying we should treat our loved ones.

The day is named after the Christian martyr St Valentine of whom not a lot is know, except his name and the fact that he died on February 14. The occasion dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia which was a very ancient, possibly even pre-Roman pastoral festival, observed on February 13 through 15 to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility.
