doodley squat

You know how sometimes a bit of a tune can stick in your head for days ?

They usually have really awful disco/rap type music at my  aqua aerobics class, but yesterday was some sort of 1970 revival CD with the 1978 song "Red Hot" by Robert Gordon and Link Wray.

The chorus is : 'My girl is red hot, your girl ain't doodley squat'
which has been running through my brain now for more than 24 hours.

Then I started wondering what doodley squat really meansand where it came from. The etymology seems unclear but is probably mid 20th century slang :

doodle 'excrement' + squat in the sense 'defecate'. Which in turn means 'absolutely nothing, same as didley squat'

Lyrics of the song HERE and video HERE

The phenomena of such a song running constantly thought ones mind is called an ear or brainworm.
more about that tomorrow :~)

In the USA, 'zero, zilch, zip, nada, jack' is often strung before 'diddly/doodly squat' as reiterated inelegant emphasis, but my own preference is for the macabre British euphemism 'Sweet Fanny Adams':

When quizzed on the meaning of this phrase, clarifying the euphemism in rolling, stentorian tones is an opportunity not to be missed.
