auction madness ??

A record €44,280 was paid recently at auction for a rare example of a 200 guilder note from 1908.

There were thousands of 200 guilder notes printed, but just 20 are known to collectors.

At the time the note was printed, a house cost an average €1,000 and a manual labourer earned around 20 guilders a week.

The guilder was also the currency of the Dutch colonies. A 200 guilder note from Java sold for $ 1.300 in 2008

Goodness knows how many coffee beans you could have bought with that amount !
